* Note: Always refer to printed material accompanying medications for specific disposal instructions.

To protect our children and prevent unused medications from entering our waterways, please dispose of unused pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications responsibly.

Flushing unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications down the sink or toilet can pollute the environment. Check whether your local Household Hazardous Waste facility or pharmacy accepts unwanted medications. If not, to prevent accidental ingestion and keep unused medications out of our waterways, follow these guidelines from the office of National Drug Control Policy, to dispose of unwanted medications.*

  • Make pills or liquid medicines unrecognizable by mixing them with an inedible substance (dirt, coffee, kitty litter, etc.) and placing them into a container. Crushing or dissolving pills will further prevent reuse.
  • Place container into a non-descript bag or can and seal with tape.
  • Place bag or can into trash can.
  • Remember to always black out personal information on your prescription bottles.

For more information on local disposal, please call our "Don't Flush Your Meds" hotline at (916) 875-9393 or email us.
